Amish Cookies

1 cup white sugar               1 cup margarine
1 cup powdered sugar (sifted)   1 cup vegetable oil

Mix well.

Add:
2 eggs                          1 tsp. cream of tartar
4½ cups sifted flour            1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda

Form into balls the size of English walnuts.  Pres down slightly.
Bake at 375* for 12-13 minutes.  Remove from baking sheet to
bread board to cool.  Sprinkle sugar on top.

Unbaked Date Cookies

½ cup butter or margarine
½ cup sugar
1 package (8 oz.) dates, chopped
1 egg, slightly beaten
3 cups Crispy Rice cereal
½ cup flaked coconut
¼ cup finely chopped nuts

In medium-size saucepan combine butter, sugar, dates and egg.
Cook and stir over low heat just to a boil.  Add cereal and mix
well.  Cool mixture until easy to handle (about 30 minutes).

Meanwhile, combine coconut and nuts.  Roll date mixture into
1-inch balls.  Roll each in coconut and nuts.  Add more coconut
if necessary.

Makes 4 dozen.
